Ghanaians

About a month before we left I went to the library and skimmed a book about Ghana.  One sentence caught my attention immediately.  "People go to Eastern Africa for the animals and to Western Africa for the people".  I was heartbroken.  Generally when you think of Africa, you think of lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos, zebras, etc.  Being the selfish person that I am, I was more than just a little disappointed that Ghana, and especially the area of Ghana where we would be just doesn't have the big game animals.  And people?  Why would someone travel to another continent for people?  For food, yes.  For architecture, yes.  Obviously the reason we were going to Africa was for the people--to train the midwives, etc. but let's be honest--it would be pretty amazing to see an elephant.

I stand 420% corrected.  I would rather be around Ghanaians than ride an elephant any day.  The people of Ghana are AMAZING.  They are genuinely nice, respectful, hospitable, polite, happy people.   Every.  Single.  Time.   you smiled at a local, they would smile back.  Not just the courteous you smiled at me so now I have to smile back at you--but a genuine smile.  Very refreshing.
